All Dulcimers Shown Below are In-Stock! (Unless noted otherwise.)
These fabulous Hammered Dulcimers are lovingly handcrafted by Cara Lindsey, mentored by her father, renowned hammered dulcimer builder, David Lindsey. Cara crafted these dulcimers especially for Wildwood Music, using the finest rare, and exotic, tone woods that she finds for us—as she performs around the U.S. Her precision workmanship and resulting resonant dulcimer voice is admired by all who come to Wildwood to play these splendid treasures!
South and Central American Mahogany, used for this dulcimer top, is officially classified as either "extinct", "endangered", or "vulnerable". Timber from this very special tree is produced in tiny quantities. Shedua comprises the bridges and end rails of this dulcimer. This beautiful wood hails from West Equatorial Africa, and takes 8-10 years to acclimatize(both kiln, and air-dry. (Includes a fine cordura nylon, padded carrying bag, tuning wrench, and double-sided hammers.)
Wildwood's Special Price: $699!
Mahogany, used here for the sound board, is a favorite with musical instrument builders, and is prized for its warm and responsive tones. Bubinga, used here for the endrails and bridges, is often referred to as African Rosewood, and its beauty is always pleasing to the eye!
What a wonderful combination of woods here! The ever popular Mahogany for the top, and PurpleHeart for the bridges and endrails. PurpleHeart wood is found in Central and South America, and has a strikingly attractive purple-brown color!
Avodire, on the top here, is a light-colored that has a lovely, natural luster that is almost satiny in appearance. The Padauk, used for the bridges and endrails, comes from Central and West Africa. The rich, reddish orange color also has an interesting texture.
Cara chose these two woods for their beauty and sound. The rich, satin texture of the Avodire has a strength similar to that of Mahogany. Photo: In addition to being beautiful, intelligent, and a talented Hammered Dulcimer player, Cara is also a champion Scrabble player!
On this top, very fine Mahogany joins the LeopardWood bridges and endrails. This wood (LeopardWood) is found in the jungles of Brazil; and, when viewed in person, it appears to form an almost "birdseye" pattern.
The pictures cannot do the Avodire justice, since it shimmers and moves in the light with a terrific, 3-dimensional effect! The LeopardWood is so beautiful, up close and personal—too bad the photos do not show it well!!
This exquisite instrument features a Figured Mahogany top. One of the rarest tropical woods, this Mahogany can easily add $5000.00 to the price of a handmade guitar, when used on the back and sides! Cocobolo, from Mexico, is another fine wood guitar makers prize. Its density makes it ideal for bridges and endrails. A back and sides set of this spectacular wood can add over $1000.00 to the price of a guitar.
This amazing, incredibly rare top, in combination with the BloodWood end rails and bridges, showcases the abilities of Cara Lindsey—a truly talented young woman! This bloodwood is from the Amazon basin, and is carefully protected by the International Tropical Timber Organization(ITTO). Any dulcimer player would highly-prize owning this fabulous Chromatic instrument.
